Abstract:

The locus of innovation is shifting from single actors to the ecosystem of which they are part. Thus, the hybridization and relational patterns that typify these ecosystems are gaining in importance in both theory and practice. Linked to these phenomena is the notion of innovation hubs as intermediaries that support the combination of inputs in outputs of social and economic value for the whole ecosystem. Drawing on these assumptions, this paper uses a case study of a co-design process of an Italian innovation hub to deepen the understanding of the principles that enable an effective governance of a local innovation hub through a multistakeholder approach. The findings suggest two critical dimensions: one – networking – referred to the connections between the hub and the ecosystem and to the relational practices needed for effectiveness; the other – identity – regarding the traits of the hub and their impact on the identity of the actors involved.
