Abstract:

This paper is about the important role that logistics can play in industrial district development in particular contexts and under specific conditions. It stresses that logistics can be considered a link among district firms but, on the other hand, some structural features of districts could hinder their logistic development. Moreover, the paper outlines the importance of a "district organizer" of logistic flows, even if it is difficult to understand who could be this "metamanager" in different kinds of district. Finally, many empirical researches show the logistic weakness of district small and medium enterprises. Sometimes, logistic outsourcing could be a solution to fill this gap: the paper highlights the advantages of this choice for district firms and the relative possible risks for the network taken as a whole.
