The European integration process has been achieved in various stages, each resolving a fundamental problem. Crisis and opportunities for further advancement are two indissoluble aspects that have now re-emerged. The crisis now demands the development of economic union. Economic union will only be achieved if a number of fundamental rules are respected, such as making the responsibility of every institution a condition for obtaining solidarity and the drafting of a plan for sustainable development both at an environmental and a financial level. In this contest, energy is the first pivotal point on which the development of economic union can be founded.
