Abstract:

Relationships between companies and the task environment concern phenomena that make their interpretation very hard.
Guided by a theoretical approach and focusing on the concept of Complexity Economics, the paper comprises a short critical re-reading of economic literature that addresses the micro-macro relationship: from traditional Microeconomic Analysis to the interpretation of the Industrial Organization to more recent Strategic Management studies.
The paper also observes deviation that, from within the mainstream discipline or from neighbouring areas of economic thought, have given rise to a digression from the original orthodox approach in an attempt to understand the complexity of the actual phenomena.
The paper finally contains an interpretative proposal that introduces the Luhmannian theory on social systems in business studies in order to revisit the relationship between the company and its macroeconomic references.
