Abstract:

This paper shows the outcomes of an empirical and explorative research aimed at outlining characteristics and trends of logistics service providers business models, with reference to the Italian context. The study is based on a set of interviews involving two leading companies in logistical business and concerning subjects such as service characteristics and production features, key factors for successful management in logistics business and useful methods and tools to define and represent remarkable values. The paper outlines the need of a deep reorganization of logistics service providers business model, especially when a logistic operator intends to integrate the offer of traditional services with value added services.
However, in Italy, this need must face the insufficient logistic culture of production firms, which are not ready to switch from a simple outsourcing of single logistical operations to the transfer of whole logistical processes to specialized operators acting as partners.
