The shipbuilding industry is facing new challenges concerning running costs of vessels and protection of the marine environment. Dimension and complexity of ships are continuously increasing. The rise of fuel cost requires higher level of energy efficiency. New technologies, new materials and alternative fuels are critical innovation factors. Technology evolution, however, involves new safety and environmental problems and this is the area in which classification plays a vital role.
